International Conference on the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material: A Vision for Transport Safety
Transporting radioactive material involves moving products that are essential for public health, manufacturing, science and energy production, and is an expanding activity worldwide. However, Member States in the early stages of developing their safety infrastructure continue to face three main challenges regarding the safe transport of radioactive material: implementing national laws and transport safety regulations based on the requirements of the Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev.1)); establishing a competent national authority that has the legally delegated or invested powers to issue authorizations and perform compliance monitoring with the aforementioned national laws and regulations; and developing the competencies of the competent national authority to achieve the sustained delivery of effective regulatory oversight.
